Originally scheduled for this Monday, the first test flight of the giant Starship rocket will finally take place this Thursday, April 20, 2023. A date that carries a certain symbolism for Elon Musk and all cannabis lovers.
As you may know, the first test flight of the giant Starship rocket was supposed to take place this Monday, April 17, 2023. But at just 10 minutes, the procedure was finally canceled due to a technical problem. Indeed, as Elon Musk clarified on Twitter, a pressurization valve froze.
In the process, SpaceX confirmed that its teams were looking for a new firing window. It is now done, and our little finger tells us that the date found will rather please Elon Musk. Indeed, the test flight will be held this Thursday, April 20, 2023 at 8:28 a.m. local time, from the Starbase space base (Texas).
A LAUNCH ON APRIL 20, THE DREAM DATE FOR ELON MUSK
In case you know, April 20 (4/20 or 420) is a date particularly appreciated by Elon Musk but also by all cannabis lovers around the world. As far as we know, this term was coined by a group of California high schoolers in the 1970s, who used to gather after class at 4:20 p.m. to smoke weed together.
Anyway, it is therefore a lucky date for Elon Musk. And as much to say that it will take some luck. Remember that Starship has never flown in its complete configuration, with its massive first stage called Super Heavy. Only the Starship spacecraft (the 2nd stage of the rocket) has already carried out orbital tests.
A VERY UNCERTAIN SUCCESS FOR THIS FLIGHT
For its first test flight set for Thursday, the objective is simple but ambitious:
After takeoff, Super Heavy will have to detach before falling back into the waters of the Gulf of Mexico
The Starship spacecraft will then have to turn on its six engines to continue its ascent up to an altitude of 150 km.
After rotating the Earth in about an hour, it will begin its descent towards the Pacific Ocean.
Of course, this is the best of both worlds. According to Elon Musk and the SpaceX teams, reaching orbit on the first try without a hitch is unlikely in his words. The billionaire fears in particular a defect or the explosion of one of the 33 Raptor engines of the Super Heavy stage. This will cause a fearsome chain reaction and the partial destruction of the launch pad. Enough to accumulate months of delay on the entry into activity of Starship.
